Rising from Adversity: Pepperdine Graziadio Alumnus Alan Cariddi’s Inspiring Journey to the Judo World Championship

Alan Cariddi

Alan Cariddi (MBA '11), a French American judo athlete and Pepperdine Graziadio alumnus, is making an extraordinary comeback to judo—something he once thought impossible. On November 5, 2024, he’ll step onto the mat at the Veteran Judo World Championship in Las Vegas, showing that true passion can overcome any obstacle life presents.

Cariddi’s judo journey began at just five years old in Paris at the Racing Club de France, where he trained under legendary coaches, including double Olympic champion Waldemar Legień and 9th Dan Serge Feist. His dedication took him to an elite level, earning him an invitation at age 19 to train for the 2004 Olympics in Colorado. However, prioritizing family, he chose to return to France. Afterward, injuries, life’s demands, and his studies led him to step away from judo for almost two decades.

Cariddi’s path later brought him to Los Angeles, where he pursued his MBA in the Part-Time MBA program at Pepperdine Graziadio. This transitional period allowed him to focus on his professional development while reconnecting with the tenacity he had honed as an athlete. Reflecting on his time in the program, he shared, “Pepperdine was a transformative experience that shaped my professional development and forged lasting friendships. The rigorous academic environment echoed the discipline I learned in sports, teaching me that resilience and teamwork are vital in both fields. I'll always cherish the journey to Asia with my economics professor Dr. Gertmenian, which rekindled my passion for ancient civilizations. Ultimately, Pepperdine gave my career a significant boost, reinforcing that the challenges we face in business and sports can lead to extraordinary opportunities."

Eventually he faced yet another hurdle in L.A.: a severe motorcycle accident that required nine months of physical therapy. Doctors warned that his athlete days might be over. But fate had other plans. After relocating to France post-recovery, he met his wife, Maud, who reignited his love for judo by encouraging him to reconnect with his competitive days. Invigorated by the birth of his son Jack, Cariddi returned to the tatami three years ago, facing the physical and emotional challenges of resuming a sport after so long away. What he found was a rekindled determination, an unstoppable drive that propelled him to start competing again.

Overcoming numerous injuries and surgeries, Cariddi began winning local matches, drawing esteem even from former rivals. This summer, the joy of becoming a father for the second time inspired him to pursue the Veteran World Championship, setting an ambitious training schedule and building strength with unwavering commitment. “I’m finally ready,” he recently told his coach, reflecting his renewed confidence and passion for the sport.

Now 42, Cariddi will compete in the -90kg category, knowing he’s already won a personal victory. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “Ten years ago, I thought judo was part of only my past. Here I am, fighting at the world championship. No matter what happens—and in judo, even the best can be eliminated in an instant—I’ve already won.”

Cariddi’s journey of resilience and dedication is a powerful reminder of the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity. We proudly wish him success as he steps onto the mat at the Judo World Championship in Las Vegas.
