NPR Marketplace Podcast Invite Cristel Antonia Russell to Discuss Product Placement in Daytime TV

Andy Uhler from NPR Marketplace podcast invites Cristel Antonia Russell to discuss the emerging trend of daytime TV shows. Networks are reinvesting in daytime TV and partnering with well-known celebrities with the goal of using their publicity to increase viewership. CBS announced, for the first time in years, they will launch a new daytime TV show hosted by Drew Barrymore in fall 2020. Ratings and productions cost for daytime talk shows on average are low.

Networks are hopeful that contracting with a high-profile talk show host will pay in the long run through advertisements and product placement. Cristel Antonia Russell argues that product placement can work if the talk show host truly connects with the audience. “They are thinking of them as real friends and trust their judgement for anything they talk about on the show, including brands they might feature on the show.” To hear more, listen to the podcast.
