Graziadio Business School Launches New Full-Time Master of Science in Human Resources

One-Year MSHR Program Combines Human Resources with Core Business Principles to Position HR Professionals as Strategic Business Partners within an Organization

Pepperdine University Graziadio School of Business and Management announced today that it is launching a new full-time Master of Science in Human Resources (MSHR) starting in August 2016.

The MSHR program is designed for professionals who want to begin a career in HR or enhance their HR experience to take on a more strategic leadership role that aligns human resources with business growth objectives. The full-time MSHR is offered in addition to the part-time MSHR offering, both of which are comprehensive programs that combine core business principles and key technical aspects of talent management.

The MSHR at the Graziadio Business School is approved by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The MSHR is aligned with SHRM’s official curriculum requirements and supported by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The one-year, 39-unit program is located at the Malibu campus and is designed for a cohort of 25 students, which provides for an intimate and collaborative learning environment. Students in the MSHR program can also obtain a Certificate in Socially, Environmentally, and Ethically Responsible (SEER) Business Strategy, a values-based approach to sustainable business.

“In order to be an effective leader in today’s business world, you need to be proficient in both technical skills and human skills,” said David Smith, PhD, dean of the Pepperdine Graziadio Business School. “Our cohort-based program and small class sizes offer a collaborative learning experience and one-on-one access to world-renowned professors in the human resource field.”

Requirements include an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or equivalent international university. Work experience is not required, but up to two years is desirable. Applications will be accepted starting July 2015.

The curriculum includes concepts from behavioral sciences, such as enhanced self-awareness, group dynamics, change management, and organizational development. Students will gain mastery of a full range of human capital management approaches in order to prepare them for a variety of leadership roles to manage modern, growing organizational workforces. Courses include job design, compensation, talent and performance management, and HR-specific classes on strategy, law, analytics, and digital information platforms. Emphasis is placed on the application of these concepts to current and future issues facing HR managers.

“As business and technology evolve, the role of human resources is elevated and the importance of managing an organization’s human capital is intimately tied to the bottom line,” said Mark Allen, PhD, Pepperdine practitioner faculty of organizational theory and management, consultant, and author.
