Is the Gig Up in Los Angeles? | Los Angeles Business Journal
Dr. David Smith Authors Op-Ed on L.A.'s Small Business Economy
In the Los Angeles Business Journal, Associate Professor of Economics and Associate Provost for Online Programs David
M. Smith, PhD, pens an op-ed on the status of the gig economy in Los Angeles. Dr.
Smith acknowledges that the gig economy was seen as a potential driver for innovation,
spurred by millennials taking contract work as opposed to traditional, full-time jobs.
While the entrepreneurial spirit of Los Angeles is alive and well, Dr. Smith sees
current economic and employment trends as indicators that the gig economy might be
at risk. He offers advice on how the city might encourage continuing innovation.
Dr. Smith supports common-sense legislation that assures part-time workers will not
be exploited, and warns policymakers to be wary of changes to the Affordable Care
Act that will eliminate health care for individuals who cannot access it through their
jobs. He also suggests promoting incubator programs for small businesses, and incentives
for startups. He cites the Peate Institute for Entrepreneurship at the Pepperdine
Graziadio Business School as an example of innovation education and support.
