Darren Good Publishes Harvard Business Review Analysis on Workplace Mindfulness


Dr. Darren GoodDr. Darren Good, Assistant Professor of Applied Behavioral Science at Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, was recently featured in the psychology section of the Harvard Business Review. The piece, “Where Mindfulness Falls Short,” explores the implications of recent research showing the downfalls that mindfulness can have in certain work settings.

“In many situations, faking a smile is the right choice. But displaying inauthentic emotions takes work, and it often feels bad. Because of this, many people adopt a more mindless approach while completing these tasks as a natural coping mechanism. If they become more mindful, the unpleasant feelings that they had been suppressing (perhaps subconsciously) come to the fore. This in turn reduces job satisfaction and performance, as the mental resources needed for work get sapped by a newfound awareness of their own inauthenticity and negative emotions.”
