California's Economy Strengthened in September | L.A. Times
Dr. David Smith is Quoted in the Los Angeles Times
Pepperdine Graziadio Associate Professor of Economics and Associate Provost for Online
Programs David M. Smith, PhD, is quoted in the Los Angeles Times by Andrew Khouri. Khouri's article focuses on California's monthly net job gains
in September of 2017. With 52,200 jobs added in that month, the California economy
shows signs of strengthening.
Response to the jobs report – which leaves the unemployment rate at 5.1% – was positive.
Dr. Smith is quoted as saying it is a sign that the "economy is humming along," despite
slowing compared with last year. The San Francisco Bay Area actually lost jobs, which
is attributed in part to the region's high cost of housing, though Dr. Smith says
the losses in San Francisco and San Jose could be a statistical anomaly and that an
affordable housing problem can also be viewed as a sign of success.
