In 2020 the United States witnessed several social events and employees turned to their employers for support. Bobbi Thomason states how social events are a unique opportunity for corporate leadership. “Leaders must understand that what employees, especially employees of color and Black employees, are experiencing during and following impactful social events like the Derek Chauvin trail is a trauma,” said Thomason in a recent article by Human Resource Executive. Corporations and leaders must provide employees with the support they need to cope while striving to meet business objectives. As an employer, they should be keyed into the needs of their employees. “It is up to individual corporations to determine how they want to respond to the ‘politics’ of these outcomes,” added Thomason.
