Alicia Jessop Discusses the Wage Gap within the Entertainment Industry
Alicia Jessop, Pepperdine University associate professor of sport administration, was featured in Variety to discuss the wage gap in the entertainment industry. Her study “Women Entrepreneurs in the Screen Industries: Obstacles and Opportunities,” conducted for the Pepperdine Graziadio Business School’s Institute for Entertainment, Media, and Sports, breaks down the difference between male and female entrepreneurs accessing funding in the movie industry. As of 2018, only 18.6% of studio-subsidized film deals and 35.7% of studio-subsidized television deals were inked with women-owned companies, and just 18% of production companies that received non-studio funding were women-owned. Moreover, the women-owned businesses that acquired non-studio-subsidized funding raised $3.3 million on average, compared with the $24.4 million their male counterparts received.
