Kyle C. Murphy Lecturer of Strategy & Entrepreneurship

Kyle Murphy is a full-time practitioner faculty of strategy for both the MBA and BS in Management programs at the Graziadio Business School. He brings over 20 years of management experience with a variety of companies, from the Global 1000 to start-ups. Murphy's experience includes assuming various C-level positions including CEO, COO, CMO and CFO for multiple successful companies, as well as being an investment banker and venture capitalist. His areas of specialization include strategy, branding, technology and operations management. Some of the companies he has worked with include Disney, Apple, Outward Bound, Microsoft, Ariba, Haier, Lenovo, Goldman Sachs and Yum! Brands. Currently, Murphy is an active contract C-level executive and tech entrepreneur. Murphy brings practical real-world experience and an experiential learning approach to the classroom.

Murphy received his Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from Alliance Manchester Business School at The University of Manchester. He received his MBA with a dual focus in marketing and global business from the Graziadio Business School. Murphy's research is multidisciplinary and focuses on strategy, behavioral economics/finance, innovation, and branding. Murphy is an active volunteer for the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, which works with educators in underprivileged schools to inspire young people to stay in school, to recognize business opportunities and to plan for successful futures.

Selected Achievement Highlights

  • Developed and executed plan to successfully launch Software as a Service company. Achieved $500k in revenue in first year of operations. Raised $4mm in venture capital.
  • Core member of the team that developed and executed the strategy to reposition Virgin Atlantic which led to an increase in market share from less than 8% to greater than 30%.
  • Conducted feasibility study and created plan for Panda Electronics (China) to enter Mexico market, which led to sales of 50,000 units in the first two years—60% above projections.
  • Successfully developed a $20 million a month sales and marketing program for private placement security offerings through a network of domestic and international broker- dealers.
  • Facilitated strategy process with Foote Cone & Belding and Taco Bell to create the “Think Outside the Bun” program that reversed a multi-quarter, same-store flat sales growth trend.
  • As the CEO, built a professional services company from $1mm to $73mm in revenue over four year period while expanding services offering ten-fold and entering the EU market.
  • Produced brand acquisition opportunity and valuation study for Lenovo (China) that eventually lead to the successful purchase of the IBM PC brand and operations from IBM.
