MSOD Student Patrick Williams Featured in Silicon Republic: Redefining Tech Survival Through Meaning and EQ

Patrick Williams

As the technology sector faces increasing complexity and rapid change, Patrick Williams, a student in Pepperdine Graziadio Business School’s Master of Science in Organization Development (MSOD) program, is advocating for a more human-centered approach to leadership.

In a recent feature by Silicon Republic, Williams, a 40-year technology veteran and former Google software engineer of 21 years, argues that technical excellence alone is no longer enough to sustain long-term success in the industry.

Williams points to rising burnout and short-term corporate pressures as evidence that traditional business models are reaching their limits. He emphasizes the importance of meaning in work, drawing on the concept of Ikigai, which aligns personal strengths, passion, societal need, and economic value.

"In work and as humans, we need meaning more than ever to cope with the speed of change we are facing," Williams told Silicon Republic. He added that professionals must develop greater self-awareness and emotional regulation to remain effective.

Looking ahead, Williams identified three key trends shaping the next year in tech, meaning as a resilience skill, a shift toward high-trust leadership, and the use of artificial intelligence as a tool for reflection and emotional insight rather than automation alone.

These perspectives align with the MSOD program's emphasis on "Self as Instrument," a framework that encourages leaders to understand how their values and behaviors influence organizational change. Williams also highlights the role of double-loop learning, which challenges organizations to examine the assumptions behind persistent problems.
