Charting a Course in M&A: How Troy Blakely is Shaping the Future of Finance

Troy Blakely

After earning his Master of Science in Applied Finance (MSAF) from Pepperdine Graziadio Business School, Troy Blakely has built a rewarding career in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) defined by exploration, perseverance, and purpose. Recently recognized by The M&A Advisor as an Emerging Leader and co-recipient of the “International Energy Deal of the Year,” Blakely reflects on his career journey, leadership philosophy, and the lasting impact of his Pepperdine experience.

Finding Purpose in Mergers and Acquisitions

Since graduating from Pepperdine, Blakely’s career has taken him through various areas of the M&A industry. He began as an Evaluation Associate at Generational Equity in Dallas, where he prepared marketing materials and valuation reports for business owners looking to sell their companies. When the pandemic slowed the market, he transitioned to roles at Grant Thornton and Cascadia Capital, gaining valuable experience in corporate valuations and investment banking before returning to Generational Equity in 2022.

Promoted to Vice President in late 2023, Blakely found his stride helping business owners realize the value of their life’s work. He describes his role as highly rewarding, noting that guiding long-time entrepreneurs through the sale of their companies provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment that motivates him every day.

A Lifelong Fascination with Business

Growing up in a small town surrounded by entrepreneurs, Blakely was always curious about how businesses create and sustain value. The financial crisis of the late 2000s sparked his deeper interest in economics and finance, setting him on the path toward a career in M&A. At Generational Equity, he now works with small to mid-sized businesses across a range of industries, gaining insights into how companies operate and contribute to the broader economy.

Industry Recognition and Career Highlights

Being named an Emerging Leader by The M&A Advisor stands as both a validation of Blakely’s hard work and a motivation to continue growing. He views the recognition as an opportunity to refine his expertise and elevate his leadership in the industry.

Another highlight was his team’s recognition for “International Energy Deal of the Year,” which involved finding a strategic buyer for a highly specialized company in the energy sector. The project was especially meaningful because it required creativity, persistence, and teamwork. Sharing that success with his Managing Director and mentor, Chris Heckert, made the achievement even more memorable.

Leading Across Generations

As more young professionals enter the M&A field, Blakely emphasizes the importance of communication and emotional intelligence. Many of his clients are seasoned business owners, and earning their trust requires understanding their goals and demonstrating respect for what they have built. By connecting across generations, he’s been able to bridge experience with innovation and guide clients confidently through major transitions.

Outlook on the M&A Market

Looking ahead, Blakely expects steady M&A activity as generational shifts and evolving economic conditions create new opportunities. With interest rates trending lower, he anticipates improved valuations and continued momentum for business transactions. He also believes younger generations’ growing interest in entrepreneurship through acquisition will continue to shape the industry in dynamic ways.

Commitment to Lifelong Learning

When it comes to career growth, Blakely is guided by a simple principle: never stop learning. Each deal offers new lessons, and staying curious allows him to adapt to the changing landscape of finance and business ownership.

The Pepperdine Connection

Blakely credits the Pepperdine Graziadio community for shaping his professional foundation and inspiring his leadership approach. After receiving his recent awards, he reached out to former professors who had influenced his journey to share the news. He has also maintained strong connections with fellow alumni, even collaborating with one on a recent deal.

Advice for Aspiring M&A Professionals

For students pursuing a career in investment banking or M&A, Blakely encourages balancing technical expertise with interpersonal connection. Success in the field, he says, depends on the ability to build trust, understand client motivations, and lead with integrity and confidence.

“Learn to connect with people on multiple levels—personally and professionally. The ones who set themselves apart are those who take the time to understand their clients’ goals, separate the must-haves from the just-wants, and earn the kind of trust that makes clients feel comfortable relying on them during major deal decisions.”
