Celebrating the Retirement and Legacy of Dr. John G. Mooney

After more than two decades of outstanding service at Pepperdine Graziadio, Dr. John G. Mooney is retiring from his role as Professor of Information Systems and Technology Management.
Dr. Mooney has exemplified the Graziadio School’s values of purpose-driven leadership, global impact, and academic excellence. His academic journey began with a BS in computer science and a master’s in management science from University College Dublin, Ireland, followed by a PhD in information systems and business strategy from UC Irvine. His contributions have earned global recognition, including his induction as a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems, the George L. Graziadio “Outstanding Faculty” Award, the Howard A. White Award for Teaching Excellence, and the John Nicks Memorial Service Award.
Throughout his career at Pepperdine, John held numerous key leadership roles including associate dean of academic programs and executive education; department chair of Strategy, Entrepreneurship, Information Systems, and Decision Sciences; associate dean for academic affairs and online programs, academic director of the Institute for Entertainment, Media, and Sports; and as the founding academic director of the Executive Doctor of Business Administration program. His leadership helped shape Graziadio’s most innovative programs and fostered a culture of interdisciplinary excellence.
Beyond Pepperdine, Dr. Mooney sustained a robust global presence as a visiting scholar and academic research fellow at the MIT Sloan Center for Information Systems Research, co-founder and board member of Realex Payments, and advisory board chair for Lero - Ireland’s national software research center. He also co-founded and chaired the AACSB Associate Deans Affinity Group, co-developed and co-facilitated AACSB’s “Seminar for New Associate Deans” for many years, and was a member of numerous editorial boards and advisory councils.
Known for his wisdom, warmth, and deep commitment to students and colleagues, Dr. Mooney has left a lasting mark on the Graziadio community and inspired generations of future-ready business leaders.
He now looks forward to enjoying more time gardening, hiking, cooking and travelling with his wife, Dr. Angela Tripoli, as well as continuing his volunteer work with the Irvine Ranch Conservancy, Orange County Parks, Serra Pantry, Rotary International, and Bridge to Connect, an organization that helps first generation college students in STEM to bridge to successful careers in technology and engineering.
The Graziadio community extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mooney for his remarkable service and enduring legacy, which will continue to resonate at Pepperdine and beyond.
