America's Got Talent' Epic Finale Reminds Us Why Linear TV Is Here To Stay | Forbes
Nelson Granados Discusses the Value of AGT in Filtering Talent
As a regular contributor to Forbes, Dr. Nelson F. Granados of the Pepperdine Graziadio Business School writes about
the finale of the 2017 America's Got Talent (AGT) season, and why its success signals
that traditional, linear TV storytelling can remain competitive.
Granados argues that even with the rapid growth of video-on-demand – particularly
for Gen Z viewers (born betweern 1995 and 2012) – the curation of talent by AGT, coupled
with high-end TV production and emotionally compelling artist narratives, made the
finale an ideal template for studio-driven TV. Dr. Granados – Associate Professor
of Information Systems and Director of the Center for Applied Research at Pepperdine
Graziadio and Co-Director of the Institute of Entertainment, Media, and Culture at
Pepperdine – also cites the calber of talent selected by the AGT judges as instrumental
in the finale's success.
