Dr.Nelson Granados: How Online Piracy Hurts Emerging Artists


In his latest Forbes post, Professor Nelson Granados asks readers to think twice about downloading or streaming from digital piracy sites: “If you are insensitive to stealing from the rich and famous, I am hoping to touch your heart by demonstrating how piracy could hurt up and coming artists even more.” Professor Granados examines the impact of piracy on independent creators -- at a 10% estimate of royalties lost to pirated music, the loss of royalties on one album sale for someone making $40,000 a year would be the equivalent to Katy Perry losing at least $13.5 million of the $135 million she made last year -- and notes the current efforts of policymakers, the industry and artists themselves to combat piracy.
