Dana Sumpter with Cristina Gibson Publish Research from the Surf Industry in Human Resource Management


Human resource (HR) managers play a critical role in supporting workers as organizations recover from a crisis. Pepperdine Graziadio Business School faculty Dana Sumpter and Cristina Gibson recently published “Riding the wave to recovery: Relational energy as an HR managerial resource for employees during crisis recovery” in the journal Human Resource Management. Drawing from data collected in the surf and boardsport industry after the Global Financial Crisis, their analysis revealed how employees generated relational energy through perspective taking and interpersonal adjustment processes while engaging in interdependent work. Their findings extend theory on energy at work and help inform HR practice through understanding how energy generated from other people can be an important resource to sustain organizational crisis recovery.
