Kyle MurphyGraziadio Spotlight Stories

"One of things that I like best about the Graziadio Business School is that the curriculum is rooted in real world application. For example, I approach my entrepreneurship classes like an incubator. I work with my students to use their prospective start-ups as a case study so that they can launch their business while still in school or as soon as they graduate.

A perfect example is one of my former students named Paul Dietzel who started the company Anedot while he was a student at Pepperdine Graziadio. Anedot is a donation acceptance platform for political campaigns and non-profit organizations. I advised Paul when he was launching the company and after he graduated he realized that he needed some help to take Anedot to the next level. I traveled back and forth between Los Angeles and Baton Rouge, where Anedot is headquartered, and worked with Paul to put teams together, establish the foundation of the company, and raise capital. It was a great experience for both of us and while I’m not working with Paul in an official capacity anymore, we stay in touch and I remain as an advisor to him and Anedot."

Wearing Multiple Hats: Corporate Executive and Graziadio Lecturer

"I split my working time as a C-level executive for technology companies and as a strategy and entrepreneurship lecturer at the Graziadio Business School. By staying active in business community, I’ve learned that diversity in business is essential as is the ability to lead teams. My hope is that by bringing my business skill set to the school I can develop students’ leadership and soft skills and their ability to manage team dynamics. I really believe that students in the entrepreneurship program at Pepperdine Graziadio aren’t there just to learn something; they are there to do something."

Customer Experience is Paramount

"Over the years, I’ve learned that the key to business success is listening to customers. Many people in the corporate world think that success hinges on just being creative. But I believe that being creative only matters if it is creating value for customers. This mindset requires many entrepreneurs to rethink the launch process of their company. I work with my students to develop a minimally viable product or service as quickly as possible so that they can talk to their customers, learn what their needs are and develop a solution. This is a highly iterative customer-focused process in which the business model evolves to meet customers’ needs."

An Unexpected Transformation

"I have been teaching at Pepperdine Graziadio for eight years and when I first started teaching I wasn’t expecting to be transformed. In fact, I wasn’t even planning to teach, but I ran into former Dean Linda Livingstone at a conference several years ago and she suggested that I try it out. Not only do I love teaching and working with my students, it has been a very transformational experience for me. After teaching my first class I became a more well-rounded person and have continued to grow personally and professionally ever since."
