What makes the Graziadio School unique?
I think the people make us different: the students, the staff, and the faculty. We have some of the best students I've ever taught. They're bright. They're ambitious. They're hard working. They're demanding, but that's what we like. They push us and make us do our best.
And I like the faculty because they care. And being a professor and teaching are the most important things to them. That wasn't true at other universities I was associated with. Teaching was something you had to do. Here, it's what we love to do.
How do you know you've done your job effectively as a teacher?
Joining the Graziadio School is a smart decision because you're going to get a world-class education. We are a group of faculty who work hard in keeping current with our discipline. We're going to teach you the latest tools, techniques, and theories but we're also going to teach you how to apply them. One of the nicest things my students will tell me is: “Remember what we talked about last week? Well, I went out and I applied that at work during the week.” And I think, well, that was successful.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the students. I love the time in the classroom. It's not only the ability to work with the students and try to help them, but also it makes me keep up with what's going on in the world. Not only in my discipline, which is finance, but also in what's happening in the world economy. So it keeps you alive. It keeps you educated. It keeps you excited. And then you go into the classroom and you feel the enthusiasm from the students and the willingness to listen, to work with you, and to learn. It's just a very exciting thing.
