Gaiam CEO Lynn Powers Named Distinguished Alumna

As president and chief executive officer of the lifestyle company Gaiam Inc., Lynn Powers guides her company in transforming the lives of millions around the world. Gaiam’s award-winning yoga videos taught by well-known instructors such as Rodney Yee distinguish the firm among top fitness media brands. Its message advancing sustainable values, alternative healthcare and personal development set it apart across industries. Gaiam is a company interested in every aspect of living more healthfully and carefully on the planet.

Lynn Powers, PKE MBA 1991, is the Graziadio School’s choice for the Distinguished Alumna Award at commencement ceremonies in August.

As a graduate of the Presidential and Key Executive MBA program, her career ethic reflects the principles also core to the school’s mission; namely, to positively impact both society at large and the organizations and communities in which our students and graduate are members. Serving on PKE’s Presidential MBA Advisory Council, she demonstrates the same commitment to values-centered leadership, lending her expertise to help faculty and program administration continuously innovate and enrich the design and delivery of education for C-Level professionals and seasoned business owners.

Lynn Powers serves as President of Life Balance Media LLC, an online media community that enables bloggers to share ideas, information, thoughts, resources, and aspects of health and beauty, food, shopping, travel, entertainment, and lifestyle. Ms. Powers has been President of Gaiam Inc. since February 1996 and its Chief Executive Officer since March 2009. She served as Chief Executive Officer of North American operations at Gaiam Inc. from 2001 to March 2009 and also served as its Secretary.

Ms. Powers joined Gaiam in 1996 after working 14 years in high growth companies in the retail sector. She served as Chief Operating Officer of Gaiam Inc. from 1996 to 2001.

Ms. Powers started her career in the executive training program at J.C. Penney and then served as Senior Vice President of Marketing/Strategic Development and Vice President of Merchandising at Miller’s Outpost. At Millers, Ms. Powers helped grow Millers Outpost from a 24 store operation into a 335 store chain and its revenues rose from $35 million to $575 million in that period. Later, she formed her own company LaScelta, that she operated for three years in southern California. From 1992 to 1996, Ms. Powers served as Chief Executive Officer of La Scelta.

Ms. Powers has been a Director of Gaiam Inc. since February 1996. She serves as Director of Life Balance Media LLC. She has been a Director of Real Goods Solar Inc., since May 20, 2009.

Commencement ceremonies will be held Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Firestone Fieldhouse on Pepperdine University’s Malibu campus.
